I’m working my way through our city’s privately managed, publicly open gardens, which landed me on a sunny day on the campus of South Seattle College. Because this isn’t a Seattle Parks department public space, it remains a secret park despite its impressive garden.

This is a place to stroll and contemplate life. It’s peaceful, rarely busy and meticulously cared for. From rare conifers to beautiful maples, each section of the garden feels like it’s own intimate room to spend time in.

My favorite area is the courtyard, a tranquil setting set against beautiful Chinese architecture. Don’t miss the intricate gates that are works of art.

The park is officially two pieces of adjoining land with the Chinese Garden managed by a private organization and the Arboretum run by the college. You can also take classes here. Information is posted at the entrance.
