Head south from the small commercial district on Beacon Ave. and you’ll run into Benefit Playground. Among its many benefits–okay, assets!–are a fun playground and some paths.

On the day I visited, seven 13-something boys were gleefully turning the basketball court into a skate park.

I was also drawn to the strange monolithic art on the west end of the park. The sandstone sculpture is by Joe Wheeler.

The tall trees lining the edges of this park make it a lovely spot for a picnic. You’ll also find benches and picnic tables.
