How often do you see buildings get torn down and the lots converted back into open space? It doesn’t seem to be a common occurrence in a city where land is hard to come by. But, that’s what happened in one corner of Fremont when a couple of houses getting put on the market spurred a community campaign to create a new park.

The result is Fremont Peak Park, perched practically on a cliff in the northwest corner of the Fremont neighborhood. Neighbors worked with the city and local businesses to raise $2 million and build this park. Not surprisingly, the park has a committed neighborhood organization.

Several things impressed me about this park. The first is the outstanding view that shows off Ballard, the Locks and the Olympic Mountains. Drool over the view, but then check out the interesting art on display that ties into Fremont’s reputation as the “Center of the Universe.” Here’s more information about the art.

Beautiful, tall cedar trees are carefully mixed with new native plants, creating shady places to linger.

The park opened in late 2007, and I imagine it is much-enjoyed by its devoted neighbors.
