Now, we aren’t talking about Westlake Park, perhaps Seattle’s most heavily trafficked park that sits in front of Westlake Mall and hosts lots of holiday activities and its fair share of protesters.

No, this is that funny triangle of space a block or so north that you’ve probably passed without a second glance. But, did you know that this park used to be the site of an underground “comfort station“? These were restrooms with shoeshine stations and benches that were built in a few locations in the city in the early 1900s. This park’s was filled in and closed in the ’60s.

Today you’ll only find some benches and planters, but I like to imagine what used to go on below our feet.
