A group of preschoolers is sprinting at top speeds across the huge lawn at Othello Playground in South Seattle. Leaving their teachers far behind, they dash up the stairs built unevenly into the hillside. The first kid to the top is rewarded with the first trip down the long metal slide. Before he’s been deposited safely back to the bottom of the hill, the next kid takes off. Then, the next and the next.

This is definitely one of the coolest park features I’ve seen in Seattle, and when the kids leave I climb to the top to inspect it. I’m surprised by how steep it looks and have to admit I held onto the sides until I saw that it wasn’t going to shoot me down at the speed of an Olympic luge rider.

After you’ve had enough turns on the slide, check out the rest of the park, which includes two basketball courts, a playground and acres of open lawn for games or picnics. There are also some nice looping paths for walking or running.
