Location: South Seattle
Address: Rainier Ave. S. and 68th St. S.
Acreage: 35.8

According to former Parks Historian Don Sherwood, this area used to be known as Dead Horse Canyon. The strange story follows that a homesteader in 1909 was upset after a local horse got dehydrated and died. Talk about a morbid name. And, why didn’t they give that poor horse water?

Anyway, Lakeridge Park is a geographically accurate and more cheerful name. And, it’s worth checking out at 35 acres, which include a hiking trail that takes you through the middle of the ravine. This is a handy trail description describing this south Seattle park. Taylor Creek runs through the park, one of the largest creeks in the city. The trail follows the creek, which is rushing in winter months, and makes a small loop.

Friends of Dead Horse Canyon have regular work parties and are trying to encourage salmon to return to this peaceful ravine.
