Want to take a 45-minute hike without leaving West Seattle? Fauntleroy Park provides a dose of forested solitude with a couple of miles of hiking trails to explore.

This is not stroller-friendly territory with the narrow trails and steep inclines, so my two friends and I carried our kiddos in backpacks for today’s walk.

Several entrances lead into Fauntleroy Park. An easy place to start is behind the Fauntleroy YMCA and Fauntleroy Church. Take a moment to appreciate the huge trees that create a canopy for hikers.

As we left the park through one of the east entrances, a coyote sprinted across our path and took refuge in a hollowed out log, spooked by my friend’s energetic dog.

It was easy to forget we were still in West Seattle.
