I realized today on a visit to Magnolia Playfield that kids in Seattle have got it good. Remember back when we were kids and playgrounds consisted of a set of rusty swings and a dented slide that gave you an electric shock when you slid down?

Today’s playgrounds in Seattle amaze me. There are miniature climbing walls, short zip lines, impressive forts, spiral slides, swings with broad plastic seats and even bridges that connect different sections. And, those are the features that I can identify. Many other cool-looking contraptions I would need to enlist the aid of a six-year-old to explain to me how to use them.

Magnolia Playfield has one of these wonderful new playground sets. And, with its setting in the middle of the Magnolia neighborhood, adjacent to the community center and close to retail shops, this is a popular park.

You’ll find plenty of things to do for those of you non-playground users. In addition to tennis courts, soccer/baseball/softball fields and a little walking path, the park also includes the outdoor Mounger Pool, which is a wonderful place to visit on a hot summer day.

But summer is many months off. So, today I’m content watching the kids on the playground. Maybe they’ll even let me take a turn zooming down the super-speed-upside-down-turbo slide.
