History buffs can find plenty of interesting diversions on Vashon Island, and in particular on its sister, Maury Island. A great first stop is Point Robinson Park, where a lighthouse that dates to 1884 still guides boats around a tight turn between the island and Des Moines, on the mainland.

Go on a summer Sunday and you may be able to score a tour up the tight spiral staircase to the tiny platform that provides spectacular views of Mt. Rainer and the sparkling Puget Sound.

You can also check out several historic buildings on site, including the former Keeper’s Quarters, which are available as rentals. When I visited an extended family was sprawled onto the porch and yard of one of these beautiful houses enjoying drinks and snacks with a million dollar view of boats passing through the channel.

Bring a picnic for the long beachfront that is piled with driftwood, making fun places for kids to play. You’ll also find a few short trails.
