Do we need to buy land to create a new park or is there another way? Pavement to Parks is a concept started in San Francisco that’s being tested out now in Seattle as well as other places around the world. The idea is to take land being used for parking or sidewalks and re-purpose it into something new that can become a welcoming public space.

This “parklet” on First Hill shows what you can do in an area that was previously just a few parking spaces. Pull up a seat here on one of these colorful chairs and enjoy lunch in the sunshine with nicely planted flowers and shrubs protecting you from traffic.

I’ll be sharing more of these ideas on facebook.com/yearofseattleparks, so please “like” my page if you want to follow along.
