Fantastic urban hiking is a short drive from Seattle or the Eastside to Shoreview and Boeing Creek Parks. These two Shoreline parks work as one with a network of hiking trails that allow for more than an hour of walking through quiet forest.

Several loops, all under one mile, connect at different locations so you can piece together a long hike or a short outing. These parks are a great fit for serious exercisers wanting to fit a hike in on a weekday, but also for families with kids looking for a short excursion. It’s also a great place for dog owners, with dog-friendly trails (on a leash) and a separate off-leash dog area.

Park in the large main parking lot at Shoreview Park and look for a trailhead and signage at the far end of the parking lot. I did a combination of the Boeing Creek and Hidden Lake Loop Trails. The trails have interesting and varied terrain with plenty of spots for nice views. Boeing Creek (named after William Boeing who lived nearby) bisects the park and is a fun spot for kids to explore. Parts of the Hidden Lake Loop Trail are technically closed right now because of some trail deterioration, although many hikers were passing through anyway. Don’t miss seeing Hidden Lake at the northwest corner of the the park.

Kids will also love the two playgrounds. The lower one has two play structures–the one for older kids has steep covered slides that look like indoor play areas. A second playground sits near the baseball fields, a great distraction for younger siblings while older kids are playing Little League.

You’ll also find tennis courts, a soccer field, softball fields and a large open lawn for pick-up games with views of the Olympic Mountains.

You can access the off-leash dog park from the main parking lot (take the staircase above the tennis courts for a third of a mile) or park in the Shoreline Community College parking lot a little further up the road (follow signs).
