Bradner Gardens Park

Bradner Gardens Park

Location: South Seattle/Mount Baker
Address: 29th Ave. S. and S. Grand St.
Acreage: 1.6

A swarm of busy four- and five-year-olds from the nearby Children’s PlayGarden Preschool has taken over Bradner Gardens Park on a cloudy Wednesday morning.

They are busy as bees exploring every inch of this great South Seattle park. While a pair of girls climbs the cherry red tractor, a small group is looking at the vegetable and herb beds that are just starting to sprout their first small plants. A couple of boys drop gravel through a grate to see what will happen and others wander freely stopping to check out bugs and plants.

This park invites adults to explore, too, with interesting garden sculptures, a cool windmill, amusing scarecrows and helpful little placards explaining what’s happening in the garden. You can learn about the rain catchment system and solar energy program. Kids will also like the alphabetical children’s garden and the chance to check out real bee hives.

The gardens include more than 40 P-Patch plots. Seattle Tilth runs a demonstration garden here if you’re interested in learning to grow fruits and vegetables. You can grow food either for your own family or for a community food bank.
